Curly can be worn both dry/wet. However, keeping them healthy, hydrated, and frizz-free requires a bit of attention. Water curls are typically soft, loose curls that resemble the kind of waves you get when your hair is wet and dries with gentle movement. They work well with a variety of hair types but require specific care to keep them looking their best.
TOPS TIPS FOR MAINTAINING CURLY HAIR WIG
- HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE
One of the most important things to remember when caring for water curls is that hydration is key. Curls, especially water curls, need moisture to stay defined, soft, and frizz-free. Dry curls will become brittle and may lose their bounce. A well wet curly hair is a healthier one. The hair needs moisture to survive.Use water and leave-in conditioner/curl cream spray to refresh curls without making the wig heavy.
Pro Tip: Use a spray bottle with water + a small amount of silicone-free leave-in conditioner or curly cream. Lightly mist the wig and scrunch for curl revival.
2.DETANGLE GENTLY (ALWAYS!)
Curly wigs tangle easily. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends and working up to the roots — only when the hair is damp or wet with product. Never brush curly wigs when dry — it ruins the curl pattern and creates frizz. Avoid using fine-tooth combs or brushes, as they can disrupt the curl pattern and lead to frizz. Instead, gently detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers when it’s still wet and conditioned. This will help keep your curls intact without causing breakage.
3. DEFINE WITH CURL PRODUCTS
Use a curl-defining cream or mousse specifically made for curly or wavy hair. Apply to wet/damp hair and scrunch gently to reactivate and shape curls. Water curls tend to need a bit of extra help when it comes to holding their shape. Using a curl creamor mousse will help define your curls and give them some structure. Look for products that offer light to medium hold so that your curls stay bouncy but still move naturally.
4. PLOP YOUR HAIR FOR DEFINITION
After applying your product, consider using the plopping method. This involves gently laying your curls on a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel to absorb excess moisture without disrupting the curl pattern. It helps keep the curls tight and defined while avoiding frizz.
5. DRY HAIR GENTLY
You have a couple of options when it comes to drying water curls, but air-drying or diffusing are two of the best methods.
• Air-Drying: Letting your hair air-dry is the gentlest way to dry your curls. However, it can take longer, and it may result in some frizz. Be sure to avoid touching your curls while they dry.
• Using a Diffuser: If you prefer faster drying, use a diffuser attachment on your blow dryer. A diffuser helps to distribute the heat evenly, which enhances curl definition and minimizes frizz. Use the dryer on low to medium heat to prevent heat damage. If possible, use a heat protectant when using a heat diffuser.
6. PRESERVE CURLS OVERNIGHT
Store the wig on a mannequin head or wig hanger. If you’re wearing it to sleep (lace wigs, glued installs), wrap it with a satin scarf or bonnet to reduce friction and frizz.
NOTE;
Wash your curly wig every 8–10 wears (or sooner if there’s product build-up). Use sulfate-free shampoo and deep conditioner. Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Using Too Much Product: Overloading your hair with styling products can weigh down your curls, making them appear flat or greasy. Use small amounts, and build up as needed.
2. Heat Damage: Regularly using high heat on your curls can lead to damage, making them look dry and limp. Always use a heat protectant when styling with hot tools and avoid excessive heat exposure.
